Rag Tops is housed in the historic 70,000 square foot former Jaymar Ruby factory. Jaymar employees who worked in this factory sewed pants for men. There were also a number of administrative offices here. This building was purchased in 2002 for the purpose of opening a beautiful automobile museum for the public to enjoy all year. It took a small group of employees six months to update Northwest Indiana's largest antique auto and memorabilia museum for the grand opening on May 3, 2003!
There are over 60 wonderful cars assembled in the museum for visitors to view at their leisure!
This diverse collection ranges from a 1905 Smith to a 2001 Top Fuel New York Yankees Dragster. This dragster, with 6,000 horsepower, set records for being the fastest that year with a top speed of 331 mph! Many guests love the General Lee from the hit television show The Dukes of Hazard that is on loan to the museum! The General Lee was one of 300 Dodge Chargers used in the production of the show! Most of the cars were destroyed during the run of the show and as of today there are approximately 6 originals left. This Charger is one of those remaining 6 and is in its un-restored condition. The 1957 Desoto Fireflight is another beautiful car, it is from the Imperial Palace in Nevada. Another car of interest is the 1957 Chrysler Crown Imperial convertible once owned by Ray Shlemon, illustrator and cartoonist of Dick Tracy cartoon for the Chicago Tribune. We also have a newly acquired 1970 Plymouth Superbird and a 1999 Shelby Series 1 Roadster that is one of only 380 made! There are many, many more automobiles on the showroom floor, each one is unique and interesting! TOP |
